Device Care & Expectations

Best Practices

  • Charge nightly: Bring your device to school with a 100% charge.
  • Two hands: Always carry your device with both hands when walking.
  • Clear the keyboard: Never close the lid with pencils, pens, or earbuds resting inside. (This is the #1 cause of broken screens!)
  • Keep it dry: Keep all food and liquids away from the device.

Backpack Safety

  • Use caution when sliding your device into your backpack.
  • Ensure heavy textbooks aren't crushing the laptop screen.
  • Do not throw or drop your backpack on the ground.
  • Never sit on or lean against your backpack if the device is inside.

Digital Citizenship & Web Filtering

All district-issued devices are routed through IUSD web filters, even when connected to your home Wi-Fi. Activity is monitored for student safety in accordance with our Acceptable Use Policy.

Reporting Damage or Loss

We understand that accidents happen. If a device is damaged or lost, our priority is getting a working device back into your student's hands immediately so learning is not disrupted.

1

Notify the District

Visit your school's front office or have a parent call the school. Please provide:

  • Student Name & ID Number
  • School & Grade Level
  • Description of how the damage occurred
  • If stolen: A police report is required.
2

Device Swap & Review

A site technician will issue a loaner device to the student immediately. The broken device will then be evaluated by our Tech I staff to determine if the issue is a warranty repair (no cost) or user-caused damage (fine assessed).

Fee Schedule & Payments

If the device is evaluated and found to have accidental user damage (and the student is not enrolled in the Device Protection Plan), fines are assessed to cover replacement parts. Intentional vandalism will result in full replacement costs regardless of prior offenses.

Damage Type Cost
Cracked / Broken Screen $50.00
Missing/Broken Keyboard Keys $35.00 - $50.00
Lost or Damaged Charger $20.00
Total Loss (Liquid, Lost, Stolen without report, No insurance) $150.00

How to Pay Fines

Payments for lost or damaged devices are paid directly to the school. Cash accepted.

Highly Recommended
